Test Certificate Bodycote Materials Testing Inc. BODYCOTE TAUSSIG, INC. 7530 Frontage Road Skokie, IL 60077 Date Tested: 04/17/02 Date Reported: 04/19/02 REF No: T203067 : Issue 2 Background Three Step n Seat® assemblies were submitted to our laboratory for load testing. The assemblies were designed to be attached to the tailgate of most standard pick-up trucks. Reportedly fabricated from permanent mold cast Aluminum Association Alloy 356-T51. The assemblies are rated to withstand 400 lbs of load being applied to the opened bottom step. We were requested to load test each of the submitted assemblies to failure. Load Test Set-Up Each of the submitted assemblies was opened and attached to a solid rigid fixture (to simulate a tailgate). Four 5/16 inch hex-head screws were substituted for the supplied machine screws to ensure thread engagement with the fixture. The load was applied and centered near the edge of each opened bottom step. The load-bearing cross-head speed of the calibrated Tinius Olsen hydraulic test machine was set at approximately 0.5 inches/minute, providing smooth constant loading conditions. Load Test Results and Comments The assemblies were loaded until failure. the maximum load reached before failure was recorded and is detailed below. Each of the assemblies failed near the bottom pivot area of the vertical member. Step n Seat #1: Maximum load = 1,722 lbs; vertical member failed near pivot. Step n Seat #2: Maximum load = 1,526 lbs; vertical member failed near pivot. Step n Seat #3: Maximum load = 1,685 lbs; vertical member failed near pivot. This test is excluded from our A2LA and NADCAP accreditations. The maximum or failure loads of the submitted assemblies exceed the specified 400 lbs maximum. |
